Management of pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy and gestational diabetes

Presenter: Lisa Wheesk, RN BScN MPH CDE

Lisa is a Diabetes Nurse Clinician and Lead in the Diabetes Management Program at the Anishnawbe Mushkiki Health Centre in Thunder Bay. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator, with specialization in Pregnancy and Intensive Insulin Management. Lisa has been practicing nursing in the Aboriginal health field for almost 25 years.

Objectives

  • To provide an overview of the management of type 2 diabetes in pregnancy and of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), including risk factor mitigation,
  • To discuss the principles of insulin initiation and adjustment in pregnancy, and
  • To raise awareness of Aboriginal cultural issues and barriers to diabetes care in pregnancy, including the postpartum period.
